Inclusive Student Services

Pencil crayons pointing to the words Diversity, Equality and InclusionInclusive Student Services provide a range of services, supports, programs and placements for students with special education needs in the Durham District School Board (DDSB). Students' needs are met through a variety of supports and programs within the DDSB at both the elementary and secondary levels. All programs promote integration and independence that are optimally suited for each individual student.

For most students with special needs, their families choose programming and supports through regular class placements, with an appropriate level of accommodations and/or modifications to their program. Special education classes are also options and provide a greater intensity of support for students who require this level of programming for their success. Together with classroom teachers, Special Education Resource Teachers (SERTs) and Administrators form the core of a student's school team.

Here at Henry Street HS, we are proud to have a variety of support for our students including regular class support through Academic Resource, the School Support Program and the Practical Learning Program.

The Practical Learning Program provides intensive support while teaching and reinforcing essential skills that foster independence in activities of daily living. This program is suited for students who may have intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and/ or autism.

The School Support Program provides an opportunity for an intensive support placement for the development of core curriculum and executive functioning (learning skills) for students within/ near their community school. The goal of the program is to foster independence and integration.

Academic Resource at Henry Street is located in room 206. We have a wonderful staff who are dedicated to student success. Academic Resource and it's staff support student learning before and after school, as well as a supplemental space to the classroom during the academic day. Students are welcomed to access AR after instructional time if they require an alternate space and more one-on-one support that is sometimes not as easily achieved in their regular classroom.

Students with IEP accommodations are also welcomed to write any assessments in academic resource and we will liaise the additional time they are given to write these assessments. Students should notify their teacher of this preference so that assessments in our AR room can be properly set-up in advance for the student. **Please note that students will not be encouraged to write their assessments into another teacher's class and we will 'chunk' tests accordingly to have students complete their additional time before school, at lunch, or after school, or in some cases during another class after instructional time if it has been prearranged with that teacher.

We welcome communication between school and home and look forward to working as a team with parents and guardians to achieve success from all levels for our students.

Our hours for additional support are Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 9:30 am and 3:30 pm – 4:00 pm.
